Advil. The Pain Reliever for Fast, Strong Pain Relief.

Madison, N.J., February 13, 2003 —
Wyeth Consumer Healthcare announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted final approval to the company's application for ADVIL® Allergy Sinus on December 19, 2002. This approval marked the first time that the FDA has approved a three-ingredient product containing ibuprofen. ADVIL Allergy Sinus combines the active ingredient in ADVIL with a decongestant and an antihistamine for the first time. Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, a division of Wyeth (NYSE:WYE), expects that ADVIL Allergy Sinus will be widely available on store shelves by April.

Clinical Study Shows Benefit of Combining Ibuprofen With Two Allergy Medications
Researchers found in a recent clinical study that ibuprofen provided additional benefit with the other active ingredients (a decongestant and an antihistamine) in ADVIL Allergy Sinus. As a result, ADVIL Allergy Sinus provided relief of allergy symptoms utilizing half the doses of the decongestant and antihistamine used in other allergy products. Therefore, ADVIL Allergy Sinus was associated with a lower incidence of the known side effects of antihistamines and decongestants such as sedation and dry mouth. In fact, this combination is so unique that there is a patent pending on its formulation.

This news about ibuprofen is also significant because it supports existing theories that the benefits of ibuprofen are not limited to pain relief, but extend to other upper respiratory symptoms. According to one of the researchers, Birgit Winther, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatric Otolaryngology and Research Director, Virginia Sinus Center, University of Virginia: "We already know that ibuprofen alone can reduce symptoms such as sneezing during colds. However, this study in patients with allergic rhinitis (hayfever) corroborates the theory that ibuprofen works with antihistamines and decongestants to create a combination that is especially well suited for use to relieve upper respiratory symptoms associated with allergies. This effect of ibuprofen may be related to inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase products such as prostaglandins which may influence the mediator pathways of allergic reaction in the nasal mucosa. As a result less decongestant and antihistamine are needed when combined with ibuprofen."

ADVIL Allergy Sinus provides relief from the runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, itch, watery eyes and sinus pain and pressure associated with allergies. It will be available in packs of 10- and 20-count caplets with a suggested retail price of approximately $4.50 for the 10-count and about $8.00 for the 20-count.
