What are NSAIDs?

NSAIDs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are a group of chemical compounds that often are chemically unrelated but share therapeutic actions such as analgesic (pain-relieving) and antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects.

NSAIDs work by temporarily blocking the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals in the body that signal pain. Advil (also known as ibuprofen) is an over-the-counter NSAID, as is aspirin.

For severe pain management, prescription NSAIDs are also available. Talk to your doctor if you feel that you need more pain relief than your current over-the-counter medicine can provide.
